DSP Workforce Crisis

How GoodLife U is Working to Improve Direct Care Support

Many agencies are feeling the pain of the DSP workforce crisis, GoodLife among them. That’s why we’ve worked to develop effective solutions to promote organizational change. We’ve researched and tested all of our methods on our beta site, GoodLife Innovations.

GoodLife University is a collaboration of GoodLife Innovations and the University of Kansas Department of Applied Behavioral Sciences. Over the years, we’ve leveraged our partnership with KU to develop new, innovative workforce solutions, staffing approaches, pay strategies, and service models to help revolutionize the way non-profit care providers operate.

Discovery

During this phase, our consultants work closely with your team to develop a high-level overview of your organization, programs, and homes. Then, we’ll develop tailored recommendations for your organization allowing you the flexibility to choose the best approach for your organization.

The first step in discovery is our Workforce 101 presentation. This is our free, no-commitment offering for organizations who want to learn more about the solutions we’ve developed for organizations suffering from the DSP workforce crisis.

Program Analysis & Redesign

Once your team has selected a recommendation, GoodLife U partners with your organization to help analyze schedules, optimize your payroll, and make other recommendations for improving the experience of your direct care workforce. We also offer iLink Technology solutions if they are a good fit for your organization and can educate key stakeholders on how to implement them effectively.

Implementation

Our consultants will meet weekly with you to help implement your new workforce strategies. We also provide templates for internal marketing and communication documents to help make sure your whole organization is on the same page and that the transition goes as smoothly as possible.

Why We Do This Work

  • Increased Awareness

Educating wider audiences involved in the care industry is a necessary part of ensuring better working environments for staff, DSPs, caregivers, and the people they support.

  • Better Working Conditions

We’ve been able to raise the hourly wage for Direct Support Professionals and increase agency capacity by optimizing their current workforce. Better working conditions mean workers can provide better care.

  • Industry Changes

Our work centers on developing models that support increased independence for individuals with disabilities and moving away from the industry standard of group homes. At GoodLife U we specialize in using technology solutions to fill in staffing gaps to provide more affordable 24/7 support

The process to implement new schedules was HARD for staff and managers, not knowing all of the ‘why’ behind the changes being made. BUT NOW, those same staff are speaking up about how happy they are and about how their quality of life has improved tremendously. We even had a manager share that this week was the first time her schedule didn’t include direct care hours she had to cover – and stories like this are all over the place. I am so grateful we didn’t let the challenges of change keep us from all of the rewards.

What we learned from the GoodLife team about schedules and pay strategies has made a huge impact here. We are still facing an uphill battle with the DSP crisis, but we feel armed and ready. Next we are preparing for integration with iLink, which is extremely exciting. Our industry faces real challenges, but partnering with GoodLife has been positive and empowering.
